i’m cheap, _and_ fun

Here’s a fun little parody of Apple, Sony, Nintendo, stereotypes, and the marketing industry all at once.

In the style of the latest “I’m a PC, and I’m a Mac” ads, someone put together a PrayStation 3 vs. Wii ad. Funny, but it’s also a pretty scathing commentary on marketing when you think about it for a bit. Before I saw this, I thought the Wii was the only new console worth buying. I still think that. 😉

Despite the preview pic, it’s moderately safe for work, although there is a couple chest and derriere close-ups, so you might want to be careful if your work environment frowns on that kind of thing.

withdrawl

It’s been a long week.

Walt, Lee, and the kids left this morning, and I can’t help but notice how empty the house is now. It’s unbelievably depressing, but it was so nice to have them here for the weekend.

Apologies for the quiet, I’ve been dealing with my basement turning into a bathtub (twice!), a BBQ for as many friends as I could find, and a visit from some of my favourite people in the world. It’s been a shitty, crappy, fun, excellent, tiring, and thought-provoking seven days.

I’ve had fun, but I’m a little overwhelmed right now. I have a garage full of crap that I just can’t deal with, so I’m going to go and enjoy the holiday and have a beer or three.

More later. Promise.

two nuns

Two nuns are riding their bicycles down the back streets of Rome.

One leans over to the other and says, “I have never come this way before.”

The other nun whispers, “It’s the cobblestones.”

one of those days

And by one of those days, I mean one of those good days. They’ve been a little widely dispersed of late, so it was nice that it came along on a day where the weather was damn near perfect.

I managed to get a tonne done, including making a batch of fresh Pico de Gallo and scarfing it down with a few chips. The nice part about knowing what goes into something you make is not having to guess whether it’s adding to the balloon or not. It didn’t, and the ratio of Pico to nacho chip was heavily weighted in Pico’s favour.

I also managed to get a 35 minute run and a 30 minute cycle in this aft, and felt amazing afterwards. So amazing that I went on a two-hour walk around the market and surrounding area to take in the sights and snap a few pics. This pic was taken this eve, and is a close tie for my fave of the day. A few more can be seen over on my little spot ‘o flickr.

For all of you who use deadsquid for one thing or another, there were many, many upgrades performed today. If you find that things are funky with your website or email (heaven forbid), please let me know immediately. I’ve tested pretty much everything, so I’m reasonably sure you won’t notice a thing. If you do, sing out.

So yeah. Good day. I wish it were longer. But then again, my dogs be whipped, so it’s probably a good thing I’m frappin the sac shortly.

sanctity of life

As you may (or may not) have heard, the little man in the big house down South vetoed a stem cell research bill that would have permitted federal funding for research using discarded embryos.

The primary reason given was that every life was sacred, and that it was the personal responsibility of the president to ensure that the moral line not be crossed. As usual, Jon Stewart and his crew came up with a fine response.

It’s unfortunate this type of research doesn’t get more funding, as there have been some pretty impressive results (and, to be fair, other techniques are showing promise as well). The bill was (I thought) well laid out and had some pretty clear definitions of what was permissible and what wasn’t. It’ll continue elsewhere, but the main point of the vid is how Bush is selectively moral 🙂

Tip of the hat to the folks at The Daily Show.

Went out with Mark today and had a horrible round. On the third hole, I missed my line by about 80 degrees to the right. That’s not a typo. It wasn’t quite a right angle, but I did manage to make the longest hole on the course longer, and the rest of the round followed suit.

Thankfully, I managed to get this shot. If you spend some time on it, it has a ridiculous amount of contrasts and complements, and is pretty interesting (to me, anyways). I figure it was taken a couple thousandths of a second before the disc comes free, and it captures the effort that goes into hucking a piece of plastic a few hundred feet.

I finished the round with my worst score in over a year (+8), but it was a good time, and it’s nice to be able to go for a stroll in the park and shoot the shit with a good friend.

a little update

I’m on vacation this week, and I haven’t done a whole lot with the computer other than play a little WoW. So, a quick update on what’s gone on in the last week or so.

  • Shot even par at Jacques Cartier while playing with Mark on the weekend.
  • Got my camera back from Canon. It took just a little under four weeks round-trip, and I’m heading out in a few minutes to play a little.
  • Slept in four days of the last seven, including until noon on Monday. (exciting!)
  • Took in KC (of the Sunshine Band), Gloria Gaynor, and Tavares at the Ottawa Bluesfest. It was pretty terrible. Thankfully, the New Pornographers were playing that night as well, and were better.
  • I’ve run three times and cycled three times since last Saturday, and I’m feeling pretty damn good.
  • My car still needs its oil changed and a good cleaning.
  • I’ve started the ball rolling on pulling the striped handle. As they say “…and the adventure continues”
  • Stevo didn’t call again while he and the fam was in town. I now have a complex.
  • I’ve played far to much World of Warcraft this week.

That’s all I have. Very boring, but it’s been good.

hah! i’m unique!

Although in this case I’m really not sure if that’s a good thing. Yay bugs tearing other bugs apart on the bedroom floor! There’s actually pieces of moth everywhere. Goddamn ants. The original is here.

it’s working

A few weeks ago I mentioned that I had purchased a second pair of orthotics and some new shoes to go with them. I’m happy to report that things are going pretty damn well.

My first pair of Nimbus VIII’s had to be returned after a couple weeks because of a bad seam in the heel that created a nasty perma-blister. The replacements are perfect. The shoe is light, comfortable, and a dream to run on. They truly are a cushioning shoe designed for running, and running only, so don’t try them with anything that needs lateral support.

The orthotics seem to be working just fine, and after a couple weeks of the pain shifting from the outside of the fifth metatarsal to the inside arch to the balls of my feet, it’s a shadow of its former self. I’m stretching like a gymnast (yes, that’s an exaggeration) and am feeling about as limber as a 4×4, but it’s getting there. I’m running around 20km/week, and it’s increasing.

So… it’s working, and I’m training for an event in October. We’ll see how things continue.
