that’s exactly it

Man, Grumpy Chris managed to capture exactly how I’ve been feeling lately. I’ve been struggling to figure it out for myself… well… admit it to myself, and he just comes right out and says it.

You’ve got to decide if “coulda been” will be enough to wrap yourself up in when you’re 40 years old and looking at another day in a job you don’t really give a shit about, or if you want to either have your dream, or be secure in the knowledge that you gave it everything you had, and held nothing back. Even though I have to still remind myself of it when I’m scared to step out of my comfort zone, I sleep better at night when I can look back without regret. My soul is satisfied only when I’m drained from the battle, not when I hold my best efforts in reserve.

Damn skippy. I’m on closer-to-40-than-30 side of things, and I seem to be fixated on the “if only” from 2001 on. I think I’ve been stuck pretty firmly in a comfort zone that is boring as hell, and I will have to ditch it to make me happy. All I have to do is figure that part out. 😉

I have more thinking to do. Crap.

oh. my. god.

This is, quite possibly, the vilest recipe I have had the misfortune to come across. Ingredients include:

1 large bag of pork rinds
1 brick of Velveeta Cheese
1/4 cup sour cream
6 slices of crispy bacon
1 small onion
1/4 cup maple syrup
2 jalapeno peppers
1/2 bag of chocolate chips (butterscotch chips may be substituted)

I’m nauseous just reading that. Thank god there are no pictures. At least you can supplement the pork rinds and cheese goodness with hints of chocolate or butterscotch. On second thought, I’m tempted to make it and take pictures so I can satisfy your curiousity (and mine) of what something this nasty actually looks like, and to give us all nightmares for a couple months.

Thank you interweeb, for sharing these dark secrets.

Actually, most of Bert Christensen’s Weird & Different Recipes is pretty entertaining. Do check it out.

Also, a variation, from the Low-carb Cooking site. Really, it’s a health food.

aftermath

On Wednesday nights, I go running with a few friends. The routine is usually meet at someone’s house at 1900, run for 45 minutes or so, then go to the pub for a meal, a drink or two, and some great conversation.

In the summertime it changes a little. Instead of going to the pub we head to someone’s house with food in hand and have a BBQ after. They run a little longer than the pub visits, but they’re an awful lot more fun.

Tonight it was my turn to cook, so I made beef kabobs and roast herbed potatoes. I marinated the beef in a mixture of soy, sesame oil, wasabi, maple syrup, and a Chinese five-spice mix. They were pretty awesome.

Terry brought a goat cheese, mandarin, and cranberry salad , Iz brough a fresh berry pie with a gluten-free pastry, and Pierre and Carol brought a couple bottles of a really nice Italian (!) Merlot. A phenomenal dinner.

I can honestly say that Wednesday is my favourite day of the week (although Thursday’s a little painful).

I love the summer.

moggy memes

Moggy responds to a lot of memes. Some of them are entertaining, some of them are not (to me; she’s a little more easily amused, I guess – and I say that in a good way). Today’s was something I can answer and thought it was kinda cool (and I even share one answer with her).

Here we go:

that’s “zdeno” with a “b”

Today, I have to admit, I am really, really happy that I’m not a Sens fan. That said, I think Mr. Chara has made a colossal mistake in signing with the Bruins. Unless, of course, it’s all about the 7.5 big per year and not about the game. In that case, good deal!

I’m still waiting for JFjr to do something interesting… like… get Pronger and Peca in white and blue. That would be interesting. Hell… that would be amazing.

happy canada day!

On this day, 139 years ago, our big little place on the big blue marble was created. My parents were married on the 100th anniversary, and the 125th anniversary seems like it was only yesterday.

Happy birthday to the place I will always call “home”, no matter where I end up.

*sniff*

(and ya, I gotta fix the flickr formatting, I know)

I know exactly how you feel (at least, I’m pretty sure I do).

Good luck.

Remember: sunshine and fuzz therapy in large quantities.

so maybe they’re working

I’ve run three times this week, and things are feeling a lot better. The excruciating pain along the fifth metatarsal has faded considerably. My knee isn’t telling me to stop after twenty minutes. I now get some pain in the arches, but I was told to expect that as the foot adjusts to the corrections over time (2-4 months). I ran along the canal last night and, despite being warmer than I’m normally comfortable with, had a great time.

<insert cautious optimism here>

r&r

Today I shipped my less-than-two-month-old camera back to Canon for repairs. In the process of shipping it I learned several things:

  • I really dislike packaging fragile things for shipping. Think “snowball made of cardboard and bubble wrap”.
  • I should be more careful with carpet knives if I expect to have all my fingers when I die (cause in the afterlife, they’re oh-so-useful!)
  • You can insure stuff for $2,000 when you use Canada Post, and it costs around $14.
  • Faye Raye was Canadian, and they have a stamp to commemorate that (along with Lorne Greene and others).
  • My car needs a new water pump.
  • Canon USA Tech Support rocks.
  • Canon Canada Tech Support doesn’t.
  • You can get a ticket for parking in the 15 minute Canada Post parking area if you’re there for less than 15 minutes.

Here’s hoping it comes home happy, rested, and unbroken.
