Bridge Mode for the Bell HH1000 / HH2000 Modems

I use Unifi gear pretty much exclusively for home networking, and hate using ISP-provided hardware for anything other than a modem. We recently took over a small business that include a Bell contract for internet services (and boy do they fuck you), and that included their HH2000 Modem. Their customer support insisted you couldn’t put it into bridge mode, and that is a lie.

There is all kinds of shit advice on the internets, but this one was gold, and I am reproducing it here in case it ever gets taken down, and have added a little more info to it.

I recently had tons of troubles setting up Bell with my own router and I failed miserably.

However, I was lucky enough to get a hold of someone very technical (THANK YOU Katie!)

Basically, in order to bypass Bell hub 1000/2000 you need to disable it and turn it into bridge mode; by doing the following:

NOTE: I had Internet ONLY. Ymmv if you’re using a phone connected to Bell’s modem (I haven’t tested so can’t stand by whether it works or not if the Internet service is bridged)

In order to do it, you’ll need to login to your Bell router to disable its wireless networking. You’ll also need your PPoE username and password, which must also be configured with your 3rd party router using PPPoE. This should be with your signup info, but if you’ve lost it, you’ll need to contact bell support to reset it if you’re an SMB customer, or use your Bell web portal if you’re a residnetial customer to reset the password. Ok, here’s what you do:

  • Configure your third-party router to use PPPoE on the WAN port (vs. DHCP or other) using your bell username and password. With our SMB service my username was my b* username (on your bill), but I needed to add @bellnet.ca to it for it to authenticate/start service up)
  • Plug your third-party router WAN port into LAN Port 1 on the Bell router
  • Disable the wireless network and WPS on your Bell router
  • When you’re ready to flip the HH2000 to bridge mode, press the Brightness and Reset buttons on the front of the modem/router for about 20 seconds (3rd button and the reset button) until the power button turns purple
  • The web interface will no longer be accessible, and you should be in bridge mode

Again, this will disable everything and then you will have to setup PPOE in your own router. (YES you still need their hub for it to work – confirmed, it will not work without the Bell hardware, despite being an ethernet connection on prem. Fibre connects are different, this is not the page you want for that.)

Username is provided by bell http://support.bell.ca/Internet/Connect … d-password, and it’s on your bill as well.

username: b1abcd12 (sometimes you need to add @bellnet.ca)
password: whatever you set it to at mybell.ca

In case you screw up or cable doesn’t work, you can enable it back by pressing reset + wps + password buttons at the same time for 20 seconds.
