What are your top five cds of all time? I’m really curious.

oh toughie..
most CD’s ive bought ive stopped listening to them after a while.. except the following:
Frente! – Marvin the Album
Portishead – Dummy
the soundtrack of the movie: “Tous les matins du monde” (7 string gamba viola 17th century music)
soundtrack of the movie: “Nightmare before christmas”
Frank Black – Frank Black (his first one)
there are others.. but they’re cassettes.. and not CDs 😉
OK Kev, you asked for it. I’m excluding compilation albums, which pretty well excludes anything in my Ninja Tune, dub & old-school funk collections.
The Clash, London Calling – I first started listening to this 23 years ago when my older brother bought the album, and I still listen to it like I bought it yesterday. Long before crappy rap/rock, etc., The Clash brilliantly mixed punk with dub/reggae, surf, rockabilly, ska just to name a few. Any punk band that inspires Bob Marley (Punky Raggae Party was written after he heard their earlier cover of Junior Murvin’s “Police & Thieves”) deserves to be top of the list. This is their crowning effort, so there you go.
Eric B & Rakim, Paid in Full – Rakim, the best MC ever. Period. Now go pump up the volume and eat some fish.
Curtis Mayfield, Superfly (soundtrack) – Best original soundtrack ever (followed by James Brown’s “Black Caesar”), plus it’s Curtis freakin Mayfield! R.I.P.
Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Blood Sugar Sex Magik – dangerously close to being based on sentimentality, but, nah, it’s just a brilliant album.
Buck 65, Square – 4 tracks, 61 minutes. Let’s see if it stands the test of time, but I thought I’d include one newer entry

And, just because it bugs me leaving these off, I’ll include the also rans, or one’s that would make the cut if I reposted tomorrow, next week, etc. :
The Stooges, The Stooges
Underworld, Second Toughest in the Infants
John Zorn, The Big Gundown
The Roots, Things Fall Apart
Afghan Whigs, Gentleman – the soundtrack to every breakup you’ve ever had.
Jeru the Damaja, The Sun Rises in the East – The NYC rap “prophet” did have a creepy prophetic cover to this 1994 release
Beastie Boys, Check Your Head
Mad Professor, Afrocentric Dub (Swap freely with any King Tubby or Augustus Poblano release)
Happy Mondays, Pills’n’Thrills, and Bellyaches (swap equally with Stone Roses’ self titled, or most any Charlatans UK release)
Spearhead, Home
DJ Shadow, Endtroducing
Tricky, Maxinquaye
Public Enemy, It Takes a Nation of Millions
Ween, Chocolate & Cheese
Tool, Undertow (although Lateralus is good too)
Roots Manuva, Brand New Second Hand
The Orb, The Orb’s Adventures Beyond the Ultraworld
Dr. Octagon, Doctor Octagonicologist

Forgot Alice in Chain (Jar of Flies) in there
Oh, and EBN’s Telecomminications Breakdown. This list thing is evil.
maxinquaye has some awesome songs… (‘hell is round the corner’ is my favorite).. but i found not the ENTIRE album was of that high calibre.
orb’s adventures beyond the ultraworld simply kicks ass.. i shoulda included it in my list as well 🙂
