The movie was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0087363\/\" title=\"mmm... Phoebe\">Gremlins<\/a>, that early eighties movie about a cute furry beast that begat nasty, reptilian beasts when mixed with water. <\/p>\n<p>The nasty beasts had a leader. That leader&#8217;s name was Spike. Spike loved the mayhem, and took <em>great<\/em> joy in being evil. He also had a shock of white hair on top of his head.<\/p>\n<p>This got me wondering&#8230; was the Spike in Gremlins the inspiration for the Spike in Buffy? I did a cursory search on google, and didn&#8217;t really come up with much other than a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.allaboutspike.com\/print.html?id=114\" title=\"another fine example of 'too much time on their hands' web culture\">reference<\/a> to a Gremlin in one of the late seasons. The more I think about it, the more the characters personalities match, and the more I think <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buffyworld.com\/buffy\/season4\/vidcaps\/63_23.jpg\">Spike<\/a> on Buffy <em>is<\/em> the humanoid version of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dvdork.com\/uploads\/gremlins04.jpg\">Spike<\/a> from Gremlins.<\/p>\n<p>I blame <a href=\"http:\/\/axe.deadsquid.com\/\" title=\"gimmee five reasons\">James<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/coop.deadsquid.com\/\" title=\"little. white. whisky-addled\">Coop<\/a> for even considering this for more than three seconds. <\/p>\n<p>I just know you&#8217;re thinking &#8220;he writes two paragraphs on the last month, and three on <em>this<\/em>?&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Yes&#8230; yes I do. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>One of the uber-stations in the US last night was playing a movie I hadn&#8217;t seen in a while.
